Making 90° Angles

Always wonder how the builders got your house to be square? How your house has perfectly perpendicular walls? They used the Pythagorean theorem. 'What?' Sometimes referred to as 3-4-5. The Pythagorean theorem states that if the sum of the squares of the two short sides of a triangle are equal to the square of the longest side, then the two short sides meet at a right angle (90°). For example, a triangle of sides 3', 4' and 5' meets this criteria. 3x3 + 4x4 = 5x5. So do multiples of 3, 4 and 5, such as 6, 8 and 10.

Applying this is easy. Find the mark where you want the right angle to be on the existing wall or string line. Measure 3' down that existing wall and mark it. Get a string and fasten it to the mark where you want the right angle to be. You can also use a tape measure instead of string but juggling a couple of tape measures is more difficult than string. Mark 4' on the string from the distance of the existing wall. Run a tape measure from the 3' mark you made on the existing wall to the 4' mark on the string. By adjusting the angle of the 4' string, you will get a right angle when the 4' mark on the string meets the 5' mark on the tape measure.
