Applying a bead of caulk

The sign of a nice caulk job is in applying a smooth and uniform bead. I achieve this by wetting a finger or thumb and then smoothing the caulk over the joint with that finger or thumb. The water allows the finger to glide over the caulk without sticking.

The easist way to keep a finger moist is by carrying around a cup of water. The same cup of water can be used to clean off the excess caulk after smoothing the joint. I dip my finger in the cup and then smooth the caulk with it creating a nice smooth uniform bead.

Another trick I use is to wrap a finger with a moist paper towel. I use this technique when the joint is very tight and I know I will have an excess amount of caulk. The paper towel removes all the excess without removing the caulk from the joint.

Now that you know the tricks, go out and apply them. Have some moldy caulk? Learn how to repair moldy caulk. Know of anywhere caulk is dried out and cracking?
